Fontána
Vodná Ruža

Site-specific composition/
2025

A sound composition made for a specific fountain in Bratislava, as part of the Listening to Fountains project by Eva Sajanová.

The authors chose the Vodná ruža fountain for its distinctive form and its location near the Vrakuňa landfill, an ongoing environmental issue they have addressed through artivist interventions.

The composition is built around the fountain’s circular motion, created by its rotating metal structure and water-driven blades. Field recordings of water, metal, the surrounding environment, and gasping breath form a soundscape in which the voice seems to flow with the water.

Drawing on memories and observations of the surrounding housing estate from the fountain’s perspective, the piece explores circulation as a metaphor for water, transformation, and the obstacles it continually overcomes. It also reflects on cultural and political cycles, where events and patterns return throughout history in ever-changing forms.
